To mark the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Asian Legal Resource Centre (ALRC) released an advance version of its special report on practice of torture in Indonesia today.

Human Rights and Peace for Papua, the international coalition for Papua of faith-based and civil society organisations is publishing its third report on the human rights situation in Papua together with Franciscans International. The 2013 report has now been published and is available for download at www.humanrightspapua.org. The report covers cases of violations of civil, political, economic, social, cultural as well as indegenous peoples' rights. It was prepared by a group of human rights organisations in based in Papua, Jakarta and abroad and covers events between October 2011 and March 2013.

NGOs an Churches have been reporting about a series of massive violence, shooting, killing, state’s denial of the democratic expressions of opinion, forced disbandment of the peaceful demonstration, arrest and detaining combined with torture in several places, such as in Sorong, Jayapura, Biak, Timika adan Wamena, from 30 April 2013 to 22 May 2013.
In the reports it was state that the security troops of the Papua Police and Indonesian Military of the KODAM XVII/Cenderawasih were the main actors. The democracy in Papua has totally been suppressed. Foreign reporters, international diplomats, and international human rights institutes are “banned” to visit Papua Land.

Credible and disturbing reports are continuing to emerge from Tingginambut, Puncak Jaya, in the West Papuan highlands, detailing evidence of another violent rampage by the Indonesian army special forces (Kopassus) against civilians throughout May, allegedly by Kopassus officers stationed in the district which has been suffering war conditions since February.

Security forces faced persistent allegations of human rights violations, including torture and other ill-treatment and excessive use of force and firearms. At least 76 prisoners of conscience remained behind bars. Intimidation and attacks against religious minorities were rife. Discriminatory laws, policies and practices prevented women and girls from exercising their rights, in particular, sexual and reproductive rights. No progress was made in bringing perpetrators of past human rights violations to justice. No executions were reported.
