The Prime Minister of Vanuatu, Moana Carcasses Kalosil, called for international measures in order to improve the human rights situation in West Papua on March 4, 2014 in Geneva.

In his statement at the 25th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, Carcasses spoke of the human rights violations in Papua since 1969 and said that approximately 10 percent of the local population had been killed by Indonesian security forces since 1963. Carcasses stated that in the period between October 2011 and March 2013, 25 Papuans had been killed without the perpetrators being held responsible in court.

Carcasses called for concrete actions in order to investigate the human rights situation in West Papua and to provide recommendations for a peaceful solution of the conflict in support of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s promise of entering into peaceful dialogue with the Papuans.
