The independent news outlet ‘Tabloid Jubi’ has reported the arrest of 67 ‘United Liberation Movement for West Papua’ (ULMWP) supporters during a demonstration in Jayapura Municipality, Papua Province, on the 24 September 2018. The protesters expressed their support for Vanuatu and other Pacific countries, which had raised the West Papua issue during the 73rd General Assembly Session of the United Nations. A police officer allegedly ill-treated a protester named Petrus Kosamah around 11.00 am, as members of the crowd control unit DALMAS dispersed the crowd at the campus of the Jayapura University for Science and Technology (USTJ) in Abepura.
The arrests occurred in three different locations. Police officers conducted arrests at Ekspo Waena at 9.20 am. Approximately two hours later, at 11.30 am, police officers arrested several protesters in front of the post office in Abepura. The arrests at the USTJ campus occurred at 11.45 am. The majority of arrestees were Papuan university students. All rrested protesters were detained at the Jayapura Municipality Police station (see intro image). The head of Papuan Regional Police (Polda Papua), Officer Martuani Sormin, denied that police officers had ill-treated any protester. He justified the dispersals, stating that the police was allegedly not informed about the demonstration.
