Update on mass arrests during commemoration of 1st December – at least 5 protesters ill-treated during arrests in Jayapura

The national police forcefully dispersed peaceful assemblies that were organised in commemoration of the 1st December in multiple locations of Jayapura. During the commemorations in Jayapura, 89 protesters were reportedly arrested. Police officers ill-treated three bystanders who tried to record the arrests and ill-treatment of protesters. The Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Desk (JPIC) of the Evangelical Church in Papua (GKI-TP) has  published a new report on the arrests in Jayapura, according to which at least five protesters were ill-treated by police officers during the arrest.

stabbed with an iron pole (used to hold the flag) on head, causing a wound.


Marten Iyai

beaten with a rifle butt on the ribs.


Obaja Itlay

kicked three times on the left ribs and eight times on the right ribs, once on the back, two times on the forehead, and twice on his right ear.


Ferdinan Pekei

beaten with a wooden baton on the head and the ribs. Police officer kicked him four times, and stomped on his foot with combat boots.


Andi Tekege

twice kicked on the left thigh and beaten with a rifle butt on the head.
